Building Permits

Establishing Building Permit FeesIf you want to build something such as a home or business you can't just do so because you want to. Even if the location is already there and you want to make some additions or changes you need permission. You will need to apply for and obtain building permits which you can get locally. There are various costs associated with them and you won't be able to begin an of the work until you have received them.

Should your request for a building permit be denied, you do have the right to appeal the decision. In most instances this must be completed within 30 days. These requests have to be submitted in writing in order to be accepted. Should you decide to proceed anyway without the right permits you will be heavily fined. If you hire a contractor to do the work for you they will take care of obtaining the various permits. Make sure you look at them to verify they do indeed have them.

One of the main reasons why there are building permits is to make sure certain code requirements are followed. These will vary based upon the location where a person resides. These have to be in place to make sure that the structure is going to be safe for people to be in. These various codes must be followed to the T or you will not be able to use that structure. A full inspection will be done upon the completion of projects to ensure the proper procedures were followed.

Building permits and codes also serve to protect consumers. Contractors make money by the jobs the complete. It is in their best interest to complete as many of them as they possibly can. If they take shortcuts they will be able to complete many more jobs each month. Yet these requirements are in place to make sure they take the time to complete the job as it needs to be. It should give you peace of mind.

The various elements of a building permit will cover the overall structure of the design, fire safety and noise pollution. Many of them are also in place now to help ensure that efforts are taken to conserve energy and to reduce pollutants to the environment.
