Denair Middle School: American Flag cannot be flown on school grounds for fear of 'racial tensions'

Denair Middle School isn't a fan of the American Flag. According to reports, a student at Denair Middle School was told not to fly the American Flag on his bicycle while on school grounds for fear it would offend other students. Now wait a minute, are we in America or some other country? This is just ridiculous!

A 13-year-old boy, who is a student at the school, was told to take an American flag off of his bicycle by school officials to avoid "racial tension," according to media reports.

Denair Middle School student Cody Alicea was told he needed to remove the small American flag on the back of his bicycle. Alicea said he flew the American Flag in honor of his grandfather, who is a veteran. Denair Unified School District Superintendent Edward Parraz said the district reacted after several students complained. Why in the world would students complain about someone having the American Flag on their bike? It just doesn't add up.

"[The] First Amendment is important," Parraz said. "We want the kids to respect it, understand it and with that comes responsibility."

Parraz told KCRA-TV in Sacramento, Calif. that racial tensions had gotten worse in the school last year after the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

"Our Hispanic kids will bring their Mexican falgs and they'll display it, and then of course the kids would do the American flag situation, and it does cause kind of a racial tension, which we don't really want," Parraz told the TV station. "We want them to appreciate their cultures."

That doesn't even make sense. If the school actually wanted the children to respect different cultures, then they would allow them all to have the flag of their country - whether they are an immigrant or an full-blooded American. They shouldn't have to put the flag away just because it offends others. What's next will they get rid of the pledge of allegiance? Or have they already done that?

For the 13-year-old boy, it just doesn't make sense. "In this country, we're supposed to be free," the middle school student said. "I should be able to wave my flag where I want to, and they're telling me I can't." Alicea told a local station that he folds the flag up and puts it in his backpack during school.
