Those that looked forward to hearing the commentary of Joe Morgan on "Sunday Night Baseball" on ESPN received some distressing news earlier this week. Both Morgan and his co-anchor were fired from the network from their spots on the series.
The two were responsible for giving the commentary on the game of the week for ESPN. "Sunday Night Baseball" has been on air since 1990, and 2010 marked the twenty-first season Joe Morgan and his partner, Jon Miller, had been employed by ESPN. Miller only missed one broadcast of "Sunday Night Baseball" during his entire run with the series. That was this summer. He has been asked by ESPN to move to radio.
Morgan was not all that surprised he was let go from the position on the series. After being let go by ESPN on Monday, he made the following on Thursday, according to Sporting News: "They have been taking ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ in a different direction the last two years and I was not comfortable with that direction."
ESPN has not yet announced replacements for the two men, but they have some time before the start of the next baseball season. Is this a case of out with the old and in with the new? It certainly sounds like that. The face of television is changing, and this is just one instance that illustrates that. Things on television are changing and evolving more and more.
However, how much different and new can a game of the week broadcast be? What new direction does ESPN want to take? That remains to be seen. One would think a baseball game broadcast would be straight forward, but that doesn't appear to be the case!
