What do you get when you mix a celebrity with Facebook? A national holiday! Take today, November 17, for example. It’s the National Unfriend Day, in case you haven't heard, thanks to funnyman Jimmy Kimmel.
The host of Jimmy Kimmel Live has been promoting the National Unfriend Day in the effort to diminish Facebook fakeness and bring the reality of our lives to the forefront.
"We should have a lot of the real stuff. We should have less of the fake stuff like you have on Facebook," Kimmel said. "I'm asking you to unfriend anyone on Facebook who isn't really your friend - the annoying people. The people who feel the need to inform you of every thought that enters their head ... I would guess that 90 percent of your Facebook friends aren't even your friends at all. Most of them you probably don't even like."
But wait a minute! Isn’t Facebook a social networking site? And isn’t the point of networking to meet new people? So, then why is it so wrong to have Facebook “friends” that you don’t know yet that well?
The National Unfriend Day seems rather, well, unfriendly.
Of course, if you don’t like the people or their “annoying” posts, go ahead and unfriend them. And if you suspect any criminal intent or activity, don't hesitate to report it. But otherwise, consider taking the time to nourish new friendships instead of pushing your Facebook acquaintances away for no good reason. Who knows, you may be able to help each other out and form a stronger friendship bond one day.
