A professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, Mark Haub, shed 27 pounds over a 10 week period by eating Twinkies, nutty bars, even powdered donuts! It certainly sounds too good to be true, but he documented the entire experiment, and proved that calorie counting is the most important factor in weight loss. By following the basic principle of weight loss, consume fewer calories than you burn, he was able to reach his goal weight.
His BMI went from 28.8 to 24.9 and he reduced his triglycerides by 39 percent. Also his "bad" cholesterol, LDL, dropped 20 percent and his "good" cholesterol, HDL, increased by 20 percent! According to a CNN News report, Mark Haub said, “There seems to be a disconnect between eating healthy and being healthy. I wish I could say the outcomes are unhealthy. I wish I could say it's healthy. I'm not confident enough in doing that. That frustrates a lot of people. One side says it's irresponsible. It is unhealthy, but the data doesn't say that."
Mark wasn’t always a snack cake junkie; before attempting this experimental diet he tried to eat a healthy diet that included whole grains, dietary fiber, berries, bananas, and vegetables but was never successful at loosing weight.
On the Twinkie Diet, every three hours Mark would enjoy a snack cake instead of having a meal; occasionally he munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos. Sounds like a dream diet—yum! He also took a multivitamin, had a daily protein shake, and ate vegetables. To curb calories, he avoided things like meat, whole grains and fruits. It seems like eventually you would begin to miss normal food, or would feel weak and unsatisfied by such empty calories.
