Jim Davis Apologizes – Garfield Creator Says Veterans Day is National Stupid Day

Jim Davis apologizes as the creator of the comic strip “Garfield” to American Veterans for an offensive mistake. Davis created a strip published on Veterans Day, which insinuates the day is “Stupid Day.” The joke turned out to be on Jim Davis as people complained.

The comic depicts a spider encouraging Garfield to squash him. The spider says if he is killed, "they will hold an annual day of remembrance in my honor." The next panel shows a teacher spider in front of a class of student spiders asking, if they know why spiders celebrate "National Stupid Day."

Many have been outraged over the memorializing a stupid spider’s death being compared to the memorializing the sacrifice of America’s veterans with a special day of remembrance. Davis claims he did not know the strip would be published on Veterans Day. The connection was not noticed by everyone, but once explained, it could be taken as very offensive. Some even thought it meant the death of Veterans was stupid.

In statement posted on his website, Jim Davis apologizes by saying he did not know the strip would appear on Veterans Day. He said it was written nearly a year ago and called the publication Thursday "the worst timing ever.” His statement went on to say, "It absolutely, positively has nothing to do with this important day of remembrance,"
