Poor Miley Cyrus. It must be tough being the planet-famous superstar recording artist daughter of a famous country singer father, Billy Ray Cyrus, forced to live a goldfish bowl existence, enduring the harsh glare of media scrutiny and condemnatory public opinion. First, those poker-up-the-wazoo prudes on The Parents' Televison Council got on her case for dancing suggestively in lingerie on film. Then, the country has a cow because she kissed a 26 year old man in yet another "inappropriate" music video. Then, her parents got divorced (because of Bret Michaels of all things). It's enough to drive a girl to drink. And, apparently, it did.
According to TMZ, the former Disney Hannah Montana star was spotted downing Coronas in a club in Madrid. Although the drinking age in Spain is 18, apparently the authorities consider the breaking of that law "simply no big deal." It seems that when it comes to underage alcohol consumption, police all over Spain just look the other way. In fact, the local authorities believe "people as young as 6 are cool to consume 'certain' beverages in Madrid." What they meant by "certain beverages" remains unclear. (Hopefully, the lax attitude toward underage drinking excludes hard liquor.)
Be that as it may, the Parents Televsion Council is probably already in the throes of yet another hissy fit, so Miley should brace herself for another attack when she returns. Unfortunately, this time, the dreaded PTC may actually have a valid point. Adults (and 17 year old near adults) should have the right to drink alcohol if they so choose, as long as they do not attempt to drive. Therein lies the crux of the matter. Teenagers, with their penchant for believing themselves immortal are far more likely to get behind the wheel after a night on the town rather than calling a taxi or a sober friend. That's how tragedies are born.
Then, there's the other question that only time can answer. Will Miley's career and family pressures combine with her new-found fondness for alcohol to create another Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears? It's a valid question.
What do you think?
